EXPERIENCE

Kurt KuhnKurt Kuhn is known across Texas as a leading appellate attorney. In addition to being a partner and chair of Brown McCarroll’s appellate practice group, Kurt is an adjunct professor of appellate advocacy at the University of Texas School of Law. Previously, he worked as an assistant solicitor general for Texas, representing the state in both civil and criminal appeals.

Kurt has successfully advocated on behalf of clients in numerous cases before the Texas Supreme Court, the Texas courts of appeals, and the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He has repeatedly been named a Texas Rising Star in Appellate Law.

LEADERSHIP

Kurt plays an active role in the legal community, where he is the former chair of the Austin Bar Association’s Civil Appellate Section, co-chair of the CLE committee for the Appellate Section of the State Bar, and a director of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel. Widely recognized for his speeches and articles on legal issues, he is frequently quoted as an expert on appeals and the courts by publications such as Texas Lawyer. Kurt received acclaim for his development of a set of Texas Supreme Court trading cards aimed at educating lawyers and the public about the court.

EDUCATION

Kurt received his law degree from Yale Law School, where he served as an executive editor of the Yale Law & Policy Review. He was elected by his classmates as a student representative, worked as a research assistant, and participated in the school’s poverty law clinic. He also spent a semester working in the Office of White House Counsel.

As an undergraduate, Kurt attended Arkansas Tech University on a football scholarship until an injury ended his athletic career. He then joined the school’s debate team and went on to win the state debate tournament. He was elected student government president and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

COMMUNITY

Kurt is on the board of directors of the Red Cross of Central Texas and has previously chaired the chapter’s Governance and Financial Development committees. He is a member of the Central Texas Democratic Forum and the West Austin Democrats. Kurt coaches youth soccer, and is a recipient of the West Austin Youth Association’s Golden Whistle Award for exemplifying positive youth coaching.

PERSONAL

Kuhn FamilyKurt and his wife, Anna, senior trademark counsel for Dell Inc., met in law school and have been married for more than 12 years. They have a seven-year-old son, Eli, and a four-year-old daughter, Lucy. Kurt spends his free time playing with Eli and Lucy, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and watching sports.
