The State Bar of Texas judicial poll results are in, and I am honored to have been overwhelmingly voted “best qualified” by my fellow attorneys in the race for the Third Court of Appeals!

Posted by Kurt Kuhn February 25th, 2010Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline to vote online in the State Bar of Texas judicial poll. The bar poll is an important part of our judicial elections. It gives the legal community the opportunity to let the general public know who it deems to be most qualified. If you have not yet already voted, I hope you will take 2 minutes right now and vote online in the bar poll using your bar card number.
Since I began my campaign for our Third Court of Appeals fourteen months ago, I have been humbled to receive the support of over 430 leading attorneys across the district. As we continue the State Bar of Texas judicial poll, I wanted to share with you–in their own words–why so many of our colleagues are supporting my campaign.
The first birthday gift I ever gave Kurt was a home-cooked meal. We were third-year law students, and though my normal repertoire consisted largely of ramen noodles, I managed to make chicken marsala. As we remember it, everything was delicious, although it was probably only mediocre by any objective standards. If I gave him any other gift that birthday, something purchased from a store, we’ve completely forgotten it.
I have dedicated my legal career to the Texas appellate courts, and if elected I will be just as dedicated to making the Third Court an institution of which all Texans can be proud. I hope you will consider my experience and commitment to appellate advocacy and support me in the bar poll as the most qualified candidate for the Third Court of Appeals.
Last night, Kurt Kuhn was endorsed by the non-partisan Hispanic Bar Association of Austin and the Austin Black Lawyers Association in the race for the Third Court of Appeals.
“We’re committed to running a 24-county race because that’s what the people of the Third Court district deserve. That’s what this seat deserves,” stated Kuhn. “Obviously that takes financial resources, and I am proud that we have received strong support to take our message to the entire district.”
This morning Kurt Kuhn officially filed his ballot application to run for Justice on the Third Court of Appeals. Submitting over 900 signatures to the Texas Democratic Party, Kurt will now be placed on the March 2nd primary ballot. Thanks to everyone who helped collect signatures! The full press release is below.
People often ask me what it’s really like to campaign. Every week is different, but looking back on this last, hectic week before the Thanksgiving break gives a good flavor of what it is that we do when we run for office.
As I gave my two pints of red blood cells yesterday morning, I could not help but think that marching in a parade or donating blood are tiny gestures compared to what our men and women in uniform give us. But all Americans serve in some way, and in times of crisis ordinary Americans rise to service.

I can still remember the feelings of excitement, nerves, and adrenaline that I had standing on the field awaiting an opening kickoff when I played football. After countless days of practice and preparation, the game was finally on. When my campaign staff said it was time to hold our campaign kickoff, [...]
Smithville, Texas is known as the small-town Texas setting of the Sandra Bullock film Hope Floats—and this past Saturday night it lived up to the title. That evening, Central Texas enjoyed continued heavy rainstorms, and the Bastrop County Democratic Party held its Candidate Showcase at the American Legion Hall in Smithville. Both events drew lots of attention.
This weekend I was invited to sponsor and judge a chili contest in Bastrop County, benefiting Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. From the moment we eased the truck into the parking lot of Leon’s County Store in Rockne, it was clear that this was not just any old chili cook-off.
These days, the term “western swing” means something a little different to me than two-steps, cowboy boots, and sawdust floors. Last week, I went on a campaign swing in the western parts of the Third Court’s district—Eldorado and San Angelo.
The Fourth of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. Fireworks, barbeque, and late summer nights outside were probably a big part of that growing up, but there was always something more. That something goes to the heart of what it is to be an American.
It has been over six months since I announced my candidacy for the Third Court of Appeals. It has been a wild and fun ride so far, and I am excited to have my campaign website and blog up and running, so I can share some of the highlights with you. As the campaign goes on, I promise to let you know about the special people I meet, the interesting places I go, and the things I learn along the way.
